Soooo..... I went back to LIndsay the other day and of course I went to go visit my favorite teachers but, there was something that was strange about the high school. It felt weird being there, everything was different even the atmosphere but there was a huge difference that I couldn't seem to put my finger on. Then, it hit me!
People are smiling!
I know it sounds silly but, as I walked past crowds of miniature freshmen and seniors (whom have no idea what they're heading for) I noticed that there were smiling! And they were talking in class! Not about the material about the lecture, about they're freaken life stories! Like.... what the hell is this! And they were all dressed up, especially the girls, with their hair and make up all done and purses that can only fit a pencil, max.
Let me just say, that no one smiles as they walk at college. I don't really know why but, it's just the way it is. There's no smiling, just hustling. People walk really fast in college, I think it's because we just want to get to our classes and get our poop done so we can leave faster. People usually look like poop, especially when it's cold because we don't go to class to potentially find our soul-mate, no just no. Also because we can! We can go to our 2 pm classes in PJs and have cereal after because there's no one to wake us up and tell us to dress "presentable" (looking at you mom).
There isn't gossiping in class either, if your best friend has some juicy story about Brad dating Kim but spotted kissing Ashley, you tell her "tell me the rest later, after class", never will you say "tell me during class".
1. The Professor will notice
2. You're PAYING for the class, might as well pay attention
3. Seniors will give you "the look"
4. People will straight up tell you to shut up
5. If you miss 5 min of a lecture in college, you miss the meaning of life
I can't explain the smiling thing, I don't even smile when I walk. But, I guess it's because college is serious. It's not like high school where you're forced to go and it's free and its all fun and stuff.
And I miss that, I miss being able to gossip in class knowing that I won't really miss anything. I miss the decorated class rooms with weird posters. I miss the seats being arranged in 4's. I miss getting excited when I got pulled out of class to meet with a counselor. I miss hanging out with the English Department after school.
But, I don't miss the need to get super dressed up to go to school.
I like how fast and serious college is though. I like how I have to hustle to get to class and how easy it is to be able to hear the professor because no one is talking and having to take a big ugly back pack because I need my laptop.
No one cares here, no one cares if you walk around campus with a horse-head mask or get around in a unicycle (yes, people do that here).
No one has time to care, because at the very end..
We're tired, non-smiling, broke college students.
